A Journey Back to My Gujarati Roots

Growing Up in a Gujarati Kitchen
Some flavours don’t just season food — they shape childhoods. For me, Gujarat was not just a place on the map; it was a rhythm of aromas, rituals, and recipes that lived in every corner of our home. The day began with the crackle of mustard seeds and ended with the sweetness of jaggery melting into warm ghee.
These weren’t just meals. They were memories.
The Flavours of Gujarat That Raised Me

Gujarat taught me that food is gentle, warm, and deeply soulful. Some flavours that shaped my earliest memories:
- The tangy comfort of kadhi on quiet afternoons
- The earthy sweetness of jaggery stirred into dal
- The soft warmth of fresh phulkas puffing over the flame
- The bright, herbaceous lift of fresh coriander on everything
- The grounding aroma of turmeric — the colour of home
These flavours weren’t fancy. They were familiar — and that made them powerful.
🌿Dishes I Grew Up Eating
Every dish carried a story:
👌Kadhi & Jeera Rice
My comfort bowl after long school days — warm, tangy, and soothing.
👌Sukhdi
A festival essential, but also a quiet everyday treat. Ghee, jaggery, and wheat flour — simple, but sacred.
👌Thepla
The taste of road trips, picnics, and my mother’s love wrapped in a soft, spiced flatbread.
👌Moong Dal Khichdi
The dish that taught me simplicity is a form of elegance.
The Rituals That Made Food Sacred
In our home, cooking wasn’t a task — it was a ritual.
My mother never measured. She felt the recipe.
A pinch of this. A handful of that. A quiet intuition passed down through generations.
The kitchen was where stories were told, festivals were prepared, and love was served without needing words.
Why I Carry These Flavours Into Saffron Spices
Today, when I recreate these dishes in my own kitchen, I realise I’m not just cooking — I’m honouring a legacy.
Every recipe I share here is a piece of:
- My childhood
- My culture
- My Gujarat
- My family’s rituals
- My own journey
Saffron Spices is my way of inviting you into that world — warm, rooted, and full of flavour.
